This is a fabulous Renaissance agate intaglio, dating to the 17th century. It is wonderfully cut on a banded agate gemstone, with a delightful intaglio of a Roman empress. She is cut on a white layer agate, with a darker grey/brown layer beneath. The empress is wearing a laurel wreath, she has some resemblance to empress Domitilla, or one of the early Julio-Claudian empresses. This intaglio has been later reset into a gold finger ring, to be better appreciated and worn again.
